Mythology of Shakti Peeth

According to the legend, Goddess Durga (Durga) was born as Sati in the house of King Prajapati Daksha and got married to Lord Shiva. Once, saints and sages conducted a yajna. When King Daksha reached there, everyone stood except Mahadev (Lord Shiva). King Daksha got furious seeing this, and he performed a yajna again to avenge the insult. King Daksha invited everyone except Lord Shiva and his daughter Sati. When Mata Sati came to know about the yajna, she insisted Lord Shiva to join the yajna. Despite Shiv Ji's refusal, she went to join the yajna.

At the Yagya site, when Mata Sati asked her father Daksha the reason for not calling Shiva, he used derogatory words to Mahadev. This insult hurt Mata Sati, and she jumped into the sacrificial fire and sacrificed her life. At the same time, when Lord Shiva came to know about this, his third eye opened with anger.

Meanwhile, mourning the death of his beloved soul, Shiva tenderly grabs Sati's body and begins a dance of destruction (Tandava). To save the universe and bring back the sanctity of Shiva, Lord Vishnu cut the lifeless body of Sati in 51 pieces using Sudarshan Chakra. These pieces fell to the earth in many places and became known as Shakti Peeth. All these 51 places are considered holy lands and shrines.
