This temple is located in Mitaoli (Mitawali), in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Located on a hilltop, an architectural and spiritual gem, this temple is dedicated to the 64 Yoginis (powerful goddesses). Here’s an exploration of this architectural through the lens of Alight India:

History of the Chausath Yogini Temple:

The Chausath Yogini Temple was built during the reign of Kachchhapaghata dynasty during the 9th-10th century. The powerful 64 yoginis (female deities) are worshipped in the temple. As per the Hindu Tantric traditions, these 64 yoginis are known to be the manifestations of the great goddess Mahadevi. This temple was a centre for tantric practices at the time. Aghoris and tantra practitioners have been known to practise massive rituals at the premises.

India has always been revered for its traditions and the geniuses that have emerged from this land. This temple also served as a centre point for imparting education in the subject of astrology and mathematics reflecting the spiritual, religious and scholar blend of our culture.

Architecture of the Chausath Yogini Temple:

The temple stands as an architectural gem with its unique and striking features. The structure of the building is in a circular form with 64 chambers for the 64 yoginis along the periphery of the platform. The central courtyard houses a larger shrine which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The circular plan which is quite uncommon across Indian temple designs is not merely a representation of aesthetics but also significant in tantric, spiritual and cosmic ways.

Open Air Structure:

The open to sky sanctum is specially in correlation with the astronomical and astrological studies done in the premises. Even in the tantric practices, this design signifies a direct relationship with the cosmos through making celestial observations by recording movement of the planets and the moon.

Interestingly it is also believed by many historians and architects that the new Parliament design has been inspired by the design of this temple.
