A vast educational era of thousands of years starring Takshashila - the foremost university in the world and Aryabhata, the inventor of digit 0, has more than 17,000 Colleges, 20 Central Universities, 217 State Universities, 106 Deemed Universities, and 13 Institutes of National Importance in the Indian higher education system. This number is consistently growing as further 30 Central Universities, eight new IITs, seven IIMs, and five new Indian Institutes of Science are proposed.

Under the Indian constitution, free and compulsory education is a fundamental right of all children between the ages of 6 and 14. India has made significant progress in increasing the elementary level attendance rate and literacy rate among 7-10 age groups by 2011.
